About Dr. Bill Brender
Who is Dr. Bill?
Dr. Bill Brender practiced general surgery, plastic surgery and hand surgery from 1984 to 2013 in Glens Falls, NY and was triple board certified. He is also an award winning artist. He discovered the old Fredella Quarry and scale house while snowshoeing behind his house on East Sanford St. He felt a special spiritual energy coming from the site and fell in love with it. He has spent the last 10 years renovating the property. The Quarry House retreat is a self-funded establishment to create community, embrace nature and celebrate life.
Dr. Bill is dedicating the remainder of his life to meditation and mindfulness. He hopes that like minded people will come together to create a healing community that hopefully will help sustain our planet and help mankind last for the next thousand years.

My father was an artist, so I didn’t think much of my artistic talent. When I was in Kindergarten, I drew an Easter bunny across 4 pieces of papers, not knowing what “thinking out of the box” was all about. In 6th grade my tempera color painting was a finalist in the New York City wide exhibit. In junior high school, I won a scholarship to Platt Institute for a year to study oil painting. At Union College I studied drawing with Arnold Bittleman, mask making with Barry Smith and happenings with Charles Steckler.
I made a promise to attend medical school if I got in and attended New York Medical College. I entertained going into medical illustration like Ralph Netter, MD but instead went into plastic surgery. I continued to paint and exhibited with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and with the American Association of Physician Artists. In 1991 I studied watercolor painting with John Gallucci, AWS, and famed Adirondack artist. I was a member of LARAC, NCAC, SCAC and the Bolton League of Fine arts and exhibited my paintings locally in Glens Falls and Saratoga Springs.
When my father passed, I switched to water mixable oil paints. I was intrigued by the ability to blend my oil technique with watercolor washes. This gives a unique character to my paintings. I enjoy a playful impressionistic realism which always questions what we call reality.
